We spend so much time trying to manage our time…

But what if the real issue is how we manage our energy?

You can fill every slot in your calendar and still feel exhausted.

Because performance isn’t just about productivity, it’s about capacity!

And burnout?

It usually creeps in when we ignore the subtle drains that chip away at us day after day.

So I’m curious!... Not counting work, what do you think has been draining your energy the most lately?

Authenticity isn’t a personality trait, it’s a practice.
It’s easy to say we value things like family, health, freedom, or impact… But your choices reveal your priorities!...

- Stay late for work? Or go to your kid’s game?
- Buy a new outfit? Or save money for retirement?
- Invest in personal growth? Or stay comfortable?
- Say yes to the promotion? Or yes to evenings and weekends?

These might seem like small decisions, but they’re not! They’re moments of alignment… or misalignment. And the more you understand what you truly value, the more confidently you can make decisions that feel right for you.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

You can’t make authentic choices if you’re living by someone else’s values. And you’ll never feel fulfilled if your goals are built on someone else’s definition of success.

Yes, I’m proud of the things I’ve accomplished because of the work I know went into them. But I’m MORE proud of the choices I made along the way! The ones that were hard to make, but stayed true to who I am.

The ones that went against the grain. The ones that made people raise their eyebrows. The ones that felt risky… but never felt wrong.

💭 So don’t just ask yourself what goals you’re chasing.

Ask yourself: “Are my choices aligned with what really matters to me? Even if they’re not always easy?”

And THAT, my friends, is how you achieve fulfilment – the FEELING of success! 👊

We’ve been taught to treat time like our most valuable resource.

But here’s the truth: it’s your energy that determines how well you show up and how well you use that time!

You can have everything perfectly scheduled… and still feel exhausted.

You can be productive all day… and still feel disconnected, depleted, or done.

Because performance isn’t just about what you get done, it’s about what you have the capacity to sustain!

If you’re checking all the boxes but something still feels off?!...

You might be managing your time well… but your energy?!... Not so much!

Swipe through for 5 signs you might be running on empty, and a few questions to help you recalibrate.

👉 What’s one way you could protect your energy more intentionally this week?

You don’t forget the moment you lose the chance to feed the ducks… over a lie about soap.

Yep. That happened. And it wasn’t the only time I told a little lie as a kid.

Like the time I told my mom that my little brother didn’t give me a cookie (without realizing that the evidence in the form of crumbs was right there on my face).

Or saying I washed my hands with soap when I didn’t… right before we were supposed to go on a special trip to feed the ducks at the Public Gardens in Halifax.

Both times?... Busted! And both times?... There were consequences! No feeding the ducks.

No extra cookie. (In fact, I had to tell my friend she had to go home because I told a lie!)

But here’s the thing…Those consequences weren’t about punishment.

They were about feedback. They were accountability in action - not to make me feel guilty, but to help me grow!

Because accountability isn’t about blame or shame. It’s about owning our choices. Owning the consequences of our choices - our behaviours and our words. Learning from them. And making better ones the next time.

That lesson stuck with me. And I am now a strong believer in accountability when it comes to thriving in all areas of one’s life!!

So when I talk to teams, leaders, and organizations about high performance, I don’t talk about perfection.

I talk about choices! About making “champion choices” - the ones that are often the hard ones to make - and about recognizing the moment of choice and having the self-awareness to own the consequences… whatever they may be!

MYTH: Recovery means doing nothing.

We’ve been told that recovery is all about rest…lying down, staying still, shutting everything off.

And yes, sometimes doing nothing is exactly what you need. But recovery doesn’t always mean being passive.

In fact, active recovery in sport: intentional, low-impact movement that meets your body where it’s at, can actually help muscles repair faster, reduce soreness, and restore energy more effectively than doing nothing at all.

I’m not talking about pushing through pain or grinding through fatigue. I’m talking about the gentle, strategic stuff:

A light bike ride
A walk in nature
Gentle mobility or dynamic stretching
Even just breathing, consciously and fully

Recovery is not one-size-fits-all – in sports OR in life!

Burnout and chronic fatigue aren’t always about doing too much… They’re often about not recovering well enough.

Recovery means intentionally doing the things that fill your capacity bucket back up.

So let’s stop equating recovery with inactivity (or passively doom-scrolling on our phones), and start seeing it as an essential part of sustainable performance.

Sometimes stillness is the answer. Sometimes activity is.

Either way, the goal isn’t to stop; it’s to restore.

💭 What’s your go-to way to recover intentionally?

Is it gardening? Feeding the birds? A good puzzle with your family? An evening walk through your neighbourhood? Through the woods?...

Guess what!...

You don’t have to live in the extremes to be excellent.

I’m an athlete. But I’m not an extremist.

I don’t believe in “no days off.” I don’t glorify pain as proof of commitment. And I don’t think pushing through at all cost is what makes someone strong.

That might surprise some people, especially coming from someone who’s stood on the top of the Olympic podium twice.

But here’s what I’ve learned:
The athletes, leaders, and high performers who sustain their success?!... Aren’t the ones chasing intensity every day.

They’re the ones who know how to rest. Who fuel instead of deplete. Who understand that showing up consistently matters more than burning out dramatically.

I train hard… but I also recover smart.
I work with focus… but I also protect my energy.
I say no to things that may look impressive, but aren’t aligned.

It’s not about doing more OR less!... It’s about doing what matters, and doing it well.

You don’t have to live at the edge of exhaustion to earn your place in the arena!

So let’s stop celebrating the extremes. Let’s redefine what strength really looks like: making the choices that are right for YOU!

Every choice is a vote. A vote for the life you want, or the one you’re trying to leave behind.

That’s something I remind my clients, and myself, of often.

Because fulfillment doesn’t just appear one day like a surprise delivery.

It’s something we build, intentionally, repeatedly, and often quietly, through the choices we make every day.

Not just the big, life-altering decisions. The small daily ones.

✔️ Saying no when you used to say yes out of guilt or habit.
✔️Taking five minutes to breathe instead of pushing through to prove something.
✔️Choosing aligned action over what’s expected or applauded.

We don’t drift into fulfillment. We walk toward it, step by step, by choosing what actually matters to us over what’s just been handed to us.

That means taking ownership of the consequences, too. Because every “yes” is also a “no” to something else. And every “no” creates space for a more meaningful yes.

So today, pause… and ask yourself: Are your choices leading you toward the life you want, or keeping you stuck in the one that’s easiest?... Or stuck in one that looks good on the outside but feels off on the inside?

Because the truth is: You’re always choosing. Even when you’re avoiding the decision.

And those choices? They’re shaping your story whether you’re aware of them or not.

What’s one small shift you can make today to move closer to fulfillment, not just function?

It’s McHappy Day! 🍟❤️

Today, across the country, McDonald’s restaurants in Canada are giving back, with a portion of proceeds supporting families through Ronald McDonald House Charities.

I’ve had the joy of working the drive-thru window on McHappy Day in the past (delivering the goods with a “Happy McHappy Day” greeting!), and it was such a blast being part of the energy, the generosity, and the smiles.

Swipe for a couple throwbacks!

It’s one thing to serve up fries and Big Macs. It’s another to see how those simple moments help support families going through incredibly difficult times.

If you’re near a McDonald’s today, consider swinging through and being part of something meaningful. Every coffee, every combo, every Happy Meal makes a difference!

Huge shoutout to all the teams working today across the McDonald’s system for making this day special!

Unfortunately, I’m not working the window today because…. I’m actually on route to Indianapolis, and am so excited to be speaking to the General Managers of McDonald’s GIO on May 14!

I can’t wait to connect with the incredible people behind the brand in that region and, despite everything they’ve accomplished so far, help them discover what more they are truly capable of!

This is your reminder: Thriving means living to the fullest, and having fun doing it.

For a long time, I thought high performance had to look a certain way.

Structured. Focused. Intense. Which is why I often thought I didn’t belong in that ‘realm’.

My rugby coach in university used to give me ‘the look’ – you know… the look of disapproval – when he’d catch me dancing and singing in the backfield waiting to receive a kickoff… (Little did he know I was singing “Ain’t nothing going to break’a my stride!... Nobody gonna slow me down!.. Oh no!...”😉)

But I’ve discovered that, although there’s definitely a time and place for discipline, it doesn’t have to be at the expense of joy.

Somewhere along the way, many of us (I would say society in general) bought into this idea that if we’re not grinding, we’re not growing… If we’re not taking it seriously, we don’t want it badly enough…. That fun is a reward you earn after success, instead of something that can fuel it.

But here’s the thing:
The people who truly thrive in all areas of their life aren’t the ones who never fall. They’re the ones who fall, laugh, and get back up with sand in their hair! 😅

Because thriving isn’t about perfection. It’s about aliveness!

It’s dancing even when you don’t know the steps.
It’s making space for fun, even when your calendar is full.

It’s saying, “Yes, this matters”... Not because it’s productive in the moment, but because it fills you up and fuels you for productivity in the long run!

High performance should never come at the cost of joy. So… today, go play. Get messy. Fall. Laugh.
Live the width of your life, not just the length of it! 👊

👉 What’s one thing you’re doing this week just for the fun of it?
